Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development defines the initiative versus guilt stage as that stage that occurs during the preschool years between the ages of three and five years old. It is during this period that children start to take charge of their immediate environment through interaction among themselves or with parents, guardians or care providers and through playing. Parents or caregivers have to understand the importance of this stage especially its impact on the personality the child is going to embrace (Crain, 2011).

According to Erickson’s theory, it is important to encourage child play, imaginative or otherwise, as it makes them more independent by assuming control of whatever it is that they are engaging themselves. Consequently, a sense of confidence, initiative, and responsibility for and in their abilities develops (Erik, 1950). However, owing to the rising number of single-parent households and the increasing women workforce, offering maternal care has been delegated to caregivers in daycare service centers. The effects on children from the care providers depend on the type of care the child receives early in their infant lives. Thus, the attachment developed can never be jeopardized as long as it is well established early in the infant’s life.

The number of child care facilities is on the rise due to the increased voluntary or involuntary engagement in various working opportunities. These, as discussed by Stephanie, have a mild effect on the child’s attachment to the care providers. However, it is important to prepare the child for the change in caregivers. Failure to do this results to children losing trust or mistrusting the caregivers due to the inconsistent care and hence hindering a secure attachment. The children end up developing anti-social behavior. As mentioned above, the anti-social behavior stems from what the child has learned from the caregivers and the surrounding environment. The guilt expressed by children is, therefore, in response to these learned behaviors whether right or wrong.

Exploration and play are important elements in child learning at a young age, and through observation teachers can identify how children socialize and learn. Erikson proposes that in the initiative vs. guilty stage, the children begin asserting control over the environment when they take initiatives (Osborne, 2006). Hence, teachers ought to encourage the children to make appropriate choice, s even as they explore. Therapists also learn when they are able to identify how the emotional well-being of clients, address behavioral problems and how social skills affect behavior. Classroom learning provides theory on how to deal with clients, but it is working with them to address behavioral problems...
