The most costly and complex construction projects globally, Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands, is an architectural design to behold. The 2007 project that coasted 5.5 billion U.S dollars took the lead architecture, team of engineers, and construction workers three years. While it is esteemed for bringing together unique and impractical designs, it faced the following challenges.
One of the challenges the construction of the complex faced was getting the footprint of the megastructure. For most buildings, this is usually straightforward as the site is on land. However, in this project, it involved reclaiming of 560,000 m2 land from Marina Bay waters. The process involved putting in rocks, soil, and cement of the area and draining water, a tedious and challenging process. Once they achieved this, another hurdle presented itself, a dangerous layer of marine clay underneath the earth. Also known as ‘black toothpaste,’ the clay is too soft, making it an insufficient structural property. Hence, building on it was a challenging endeavor due to fears of collapse. However, the area’s reinforcement with concrete diaphragm walls in peanut and doughnut formations ensured constructions withstood the clay’s poor quality. Also, the fast building became possible.
