Assignment 2 – Short critical essay (Choice of topic)

Choose one of the topics below to write an essay and listen to the audio on the assignment

1. Food insecurity is gender-biased i.e. significantly more women than men suffer from food insecurity, and yet, women are often the major food producers and managers of household food systems around the world. Explain this paradox and its implications for designing policy and actions for eradicating food insecurity. The question you need to answer is: Why are women and girls more susceptible to hunger and food insecurity and what actions are needed to change this situation? Please do not simply give opinions – back up your perspective with evidence.

1. In many food-rich countries, there is still significant food insecurity. For example, in the USA, over 55 million people are in the Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Likewise Canada has high numbers of food insecure individuals and households. Over a million Canadian children live in food-insecure households and in Canada as a whole, there are at least 4.3 million people vulnerable to and/or suffering from food insecurity.

Why is such food insecurity in the midst of plenty and suggest some ideas for reducing such food insecurity in economically-rich countries such as Canada. Please do not simply give opinions – back up your perspective with evidence

Length of paper: 1200 to 1500 words maximum, excluding any diagrams or reference lists (weighting 15% of total grade).

Title, citations, reference lists: Please ensure your assignment has a title. Fully cite all references in the text if you are using information from other sources and provide a correct reference list at the end of your assignment, even if you have only been using one reference. Check the “APA” guidelines that have been provided on the topic board “Important files to download” for information on how to correctly represent information sources in your assignments. You can also check how to cite and reference APA style by using Google by typing: “APA citation Type of information source” (e.g. APA citation video or APA citation web page without author or APA citation chapter in edited book, etc.). You can find the APA citation for any kind of information source.

Please note: For a critical review, you are expected to seek out information sources from peer-reviewed journals and from reports/reviews/policy briefs, etc. of recognized leading organizations in the topic you have chosen. Web page articles should only be used sparingly and should not form the basis of your information sources. Never use Wikipedia. You should have at least have five to six references.

The paper should have:

• An appropriate title


• Introduction


• Review and analysis of the topic


• Summary and conclusions


• Reference list

References You should seek information from peer-reviewed sources and/or reports from national government agencies, national NGOs and research institutions and/or international agencies and institutions.

Media sources should only be used to show what the prevailing public opinions are on a food security topic but not as research evidence for analyzing a specific issue in food security.

All references must be in APA style – please use the Ryerson  Basic Guide to APA Style. Marks will be deducted for more than four citation and reference errors. If you are unsure of how to cite or reference a source, please contact me to help you. 

Rubric

• Content presentation = 10% i.e. paper should have a title, appropriate paragraphing and reference list that presents references in the correct order – footnotes should be used where appropriate if you want to add extra information about a specific issue you are discussing


• Quality of discussion about content = 80% i.e. should provide an introduction and a logical and well-organized flow of ideas culminating in an appropriate summary and/or conclusion. You need to demonstrate that you have a grasp of the subject material.


• Citation and references = 10% - by now, you should have a grasp of how to cite and reference correctly – please make sure you utilize the “Citations and References” guidelines I have provided. There should be at least four to five peer-reviewed references or reports/briefs from national and international organizations. You can have additional references beyond these four to five, which can be web pages, media information or other sources. However, your most important references should be from established journals; books by well-known researchers on food issues; reports by government, non-government and international agencies; news or web articles by well-known leaders on food issues – please do not use Wikipedia – it is not an acceptable reference source.

Note: The Citations and References comprise slightly more of the assignment mark now as you are expected to be more proficient having done your first assignment – if you have any queries about citing and referencing, please contact the instructor before submitting your assignment, if you need any advice.

Note on capital letters: Do not use capital letters in the middle of titles for your references – capital letters should only be used for people’s names, place names, recognized official names of organizations, methodologies, etc. All other words in a title should not be capitalized. See below for two examples:
