Global security refers to maintaining the security of a country and its citizens by identifying various security threats and instituting various measures in conjunction with other nations and partnerships such as NATO and Smarter Border Declaration with Canada and Mexico by the United States among others (Homeland Security, 2016, p. 2). The security measures are achieved through identification of countries crucial in fighting terrorism such as Latin American countries and the introduction of plans such as the National Infrastructure Protection Plan by which various countries connected cooperate to ensure international security (Hough, 2014, p.2-3).
The U.S, as a superpower in the world, takes up the role of protecting their national interests by taking over international security activities. The actions have prompted the country to be involved in numerous global security activities such as investing in their allies to help them strengthen their security systems and investing in international entities such as NATO, as a way to push for increased security (Urban, 2016, Feb 17). Additionally, they offer support regarding intelligence, expertise and military presence in troubled countries.
Recent occurrences such as the bombing of the Russian aircraft are facilitated by the United States’ function of providing security support. The U.S provides intelligence and professional expertise to different countries regarding potential security threats. In this case, it facilitates the collection of intelligence on the cause of the crash, providing investigation experts to help in conducting a thorough inquiry and develop conclusive findings (Williams, 2015, Nov, p.1).
The role of the United States according to the Council on Foreign Relations should be to prevent itself from secluding itself and wasting their resources. The country would achieve this by understanding and accepting other nations’ role in global security and allowing them to take up responsibilities (Hillen, 2017, p.1).
