Senate Campaign Strategy for Mark Kelly
Why the Arizona Seat is competitive
Arizona has several tight contests for the House, and the outcome of the Senate election might determine which party wins the majority. As Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly seeks to earn a full term after taking the final two years of the late Sen. John McCain's seat in 2018, control of the U.S. Senate and House may pass through Arizona. Republican Blake Masters, who is challenging him hard, is the opponent. Redistricting has given Republicans hope, and they are targeting two or three Democratic-held House districts. Additionally, the Republicans are endorsed by former president Donald Trump are vying for the positions of governor, secretary of state, and attorney general. They will also support his false allegations that he lost due to electoral fraud. Abortion rights are a political issue for Democratic politicians running for those positions.
Campaigning on abortion rights and vigorously combating the electoral denialism that GOP candidates have embraced our Democratic candidate Mark Melly who is running for this post. More than 80% of voters in the state used early voting, either in person at early voting locations or by mail. On election day, some of such mail ballots are left at the polls. About an hour after polls close, early ballots received up to a few days before the election will be counted and revealed; "live" election day vote tallies will appear in the hours that follow. The so-called "late-early" ballots will be tabulated in the following days since each one needs to be verified to ensure that the signatures on it came from a legitimate registered voter before it can be counted.
Republican voters used to mail in their ballots sooner than Democratic voters, but they no longer support early voting as much as they once did. Instead, more Republican voters are choosing to cast their ballots in person or waited to drop them off at the polls on Election Day. As more votes are counted, this means that initial results could change. A "red wave" was predicted by numerous media outlets in the days leading up to the Arizona election. Republicans were expected to capture the Senate and the House by landslide margins. Voters under 30 were predicted to abstain.
Democrats should instead make investments in victories for the progressive movement. This was the same tactic used by Green New Deal supporters Summer Lee and Greg Casar, who triumphed in Pennsylvania and Texas, the first Gen Z candidate, Maxwell Frost, to win an election in Florida, Lt. Governor John Fetterman, who triumphed in Pennsylvania's Senate race, and voters nationwide, who approved ballot measures to endorse abortion rights, legalize marijuana, and end forced prison labor. Democrats might eventually lose the House, but it still seems like the best option.
