The Root Causes of Discriminatory Attitudes in Life
Discriminatory attitudes are negative feelings that someone holds over another person. It occurs when people do not share various aspects, such as gender, race, religion, age, culture, and language. A person with a discriminatory feeling always acts to favor individuals with whom they share similar demographic factors, including age, gender, ethnicity, race, and cultural practices. As discriminators, they feel that their opponents are worthless and do not have the capacity to do certain things. The root causes of discriminatory attitudes in life include cultural differences, stereotypes, and under-representation.
Cultural differences
Culture is the accepted way of life of a particular group. An individual's cultural background is always noticed through their religion, language, ethnicity, and race. People from a particular culture tend to think that their cultural practices are more important than others. They feel that they are somehow superior to all other cultures and must act on that prejudice. According to Simpson & Yinger (2013), when people from different cultural backgrounds exist in the same location, they are most likely to disagree. This gives rise to discriminatory attitudes. For instance, Christians have a notion that their religion is the most superior according to their beliefs. Equally, Muslims believe that their religion is the most superior. It means that both Christians and Muslims suffer from a superiority complex based on religious viewpoints. This disagreement is what causes discrimination based on religion.
