The most significant lesson I have acquired about restorative justice by participating in this course is that it promotes reconciliation between the offender, victim, and the community. In particular, helping crime perpetrators understand the consequences of their actions to others might facilitate positive change. The current justice system does not emphasize reconciliation, but rather it uses the facts presented by the defendant and victim to determine the punishment that the latter should be given.
