A family history of cancer is not easy to live with especially having a constant fear that you might be next. My grandmother was the first causality of cancer. For months, we died inside watching her suffer with nothing to do to help with her pain. All we could do is pray for her and to God to relieve her of the pain. The stress this brought to our family especially on my mother was daunting. At some point, she would lock herself up and cry others she was extra calm and at her worst, she burst out in anger and got violent even on trivial issues. It would be just the beginning of our diversity as she resorted to alcohol to help her mourn her mother. Life was hard for me and my siblings as all her stress weighed down on us. She became irritable, unmotivated, and even lost her job. Being resilient for your own sake is hard enough but at this point, it meant I become just that for all of us. At this point, we already knew that the cancer was hereditary and the possibilities of it reoccurring were high on any other member of the family.
A few years later and we were at it again battling against cancer but this time for someone even closer to us. My younger sister was diagnosed with early stages of leukemia, I remember thinking about my mother, and if she would survive a second blow. When your sister is fighting cancer you are fighting it too because her sleepless nights become your own. You feel her paint to the core and wish that it would go...
