Race as a Social Construct
Explain why race is a social construct in your own words.
Many sociologists observe that race determines many factors and activities in human lives. It does not matter if people agree to this impact of race in their daily lives. Therefore, it is saddening to accept the view of different people in society based on their race. Thus, race is more like a social label on human beings. However, the title negatively impacts the manner of treatment between people of different races. The aspect of race, therefore, becomes a significant concern when making fundamental decisions that affect people's lives. Some areas where race is misused include decisions on a job promotion, elected leaders, or access to the best resources in society. Hence, the race is an aspect that categorizes itself as a social construct due to the differences it creates between people of different origins.
A social construct is a theory that people create, and afterward, it becomes accepted by society as reality. Race is a social contract due to the kind of divagation it brings about in human beings. It is the basis on which human beings are divided. In most of these division cases, some divisions are superior to others. There is no clear biological explanation for the origin or existence of races. However, it is becoming difficult to deny the racial divisions that exist in society. At some point, the aspect of racial division gained more power through political, economic, and social mobilization. The race element becomes a challenge in society when the more advantaged people start to take advantage of the minority races.
The feature of colonialism is another justification for the understanding of race as a social construct. The superior races used colonization as a technique to attack the freedom of the minority races. Such actions provide political authority to select races. It, therefore, creates the mentality that some races are inferior to society, thus proving race to be a social construct. Another illustration of race as a social construct is through the practice of slavery. There is much history surrounding the practice of slavery. In most cases, the minority races were the targets of slavers for the powerful races. However, Organizations have abolished slavery due to its violation of human rights. As a result, in some circumstances, the concept of race in society becomes a justification for abusing the rights of others.
