I. The extent of the problem of UAC’s migrating to the United States
There has been a growing influx of unaccompanied children (UACS) in the United States of America (USA). The issue is complicated because more UACs continue to intrude in the county. Still, the national and county governments have not initiated necessary programs and guiding principles to assist the children. Children without parents or legal guardians come to the USA in historic numbers, extending the UACS problem (Frydman et al., 2014:2). The numbers have been increasing annually. For example, the USA migration department recorded about 8,000 unaccompanied children in 2011, and the number increased to 13,625 in 2012 and 24,668 in 2013.
Interestingly, the number of UACS children is projected to reach a high figure because the increase expresses no signs of abating. The USCIS record of about 2,800 children applying for asylum in the USA further intensifies the UACS issue. Similarly, EOIR adjudicates approximately 1,200 child asylum claims. Most of these children come from Mexico, Central America, and China, and they include small boys and girls ranging between 0 to 17 years (Frydman et al., 2014:2). Notably, the UACS faces many issues in the street, forcing the USA government to intervene because most children don’t have the survival means, making them depend on adults and the government to survive.
II. The deficiencies, as the report sees it, of the current handling of this problem by the US government
The USA immigration department applies law inconsistently on unaccompanied children when assessing the qualified ones to seek asylum in the country.
