Political Science as Science like Physics or Chemistry or Biology

Essay Instructions:

Due date: February 21 by 11:59 pm
Directions: Answer both Prompt 1 and Prompt 2
Length: Each answer should be about 2.5 pages long (or 5 pages total). Do not exceed 6 pages. Use a 12 pt font such as Times New Roman and double-space your work.
Prompt 1: Using some (or all) of the distinguishing features of science identified by Okasha (http://shamiller(dot)net/phi031/readings.d/okashaChapter1.pdf), give reasons why either economics, political science, or computer science should be considered a genuine science like physics, chemistry, or biology; then give reasons why either economics, political science, or computer science should not be considered a genuine science. Give both sides of the argument, though you do not have to take a side. Note: You should only pick one of the options of economics, political science, or computer science — which are defined below — not all three.
Purpose of the prompt: To apply Okasha’s ideas about the nature of science to a specific (potential) science.
Definitions:
Economics: the branch of knowledge concerned with the production, consumption, and transfer of wealth.
Political Science: the branch of knowledge that deals with systems of government; the analysis of political activity and behavior.
Computer Science: the branch of knowledge concerned with the principles and use of computers.
Prompt 2: John Ziman argues that to "understand the nature of science, we must look at the way in which scientists behave toward one another, how they are organized, and how information passes between them" (page 5). He continues, "science stands in the region where the intellectual, the psychological, and sociological coordinate axes intersect. It is knowledge, therefore intellectual, conceptual, and abstract. It is inevitably created by individual men and women, and therefore has a strong psychological aspect. It is public, and therefore molded and determined by the social relations between the individuals" (page 6).
Considering the movie Particle Fever, analyze how the psychological aspects of the search for the Higgs Boson differ between the experimentalists and theorists. What are the psychological aspects? Give specific examples from the movie, making sure to identify the theorists or experimentalists by name. How do the differences in the psychological aspects of the search affect the social relations among the scientists? Finally, how does looking at the search for the Higgs Boson in this way -- in terms of Ziman's ideas -- enrich our understanding of science? That is, what does it help us see that we might otherwise overlook?
Purpose of the prompt: To analyze a concrete example of science in terms of Ziman's ideas about the nature of science being a social activity.
Citations: Particle Fever can be found on YouTube and bilibili.com. When quoting or paraphrasing, please give an approximate time-stamp, e.g., At minute 32, Nima claims that the multiverse hypothesis... When quoting or paraphrasing the course readings, you must provide page numbers. However, it does not matter which citation style you use.
Grading criteria:
The individual sentences of your paper must be grammatical.
Your train of thought should be clear; that is, the reader should be able to follow the flow of your ideas.
You should support your ideas with reasons.
What to avoid:
No fluff, filler, or wasted words, e.g., don’t start the paper with: “From the dawn of humanity philosophers have debated the nature of science…” Make your words count.
Don’t make unsupported assertions, e.g., “Physics is the best science.”
Watch our for repetitive writing as it is often a sign of disorganized thinking.
Writing advice: Do more than one draft of the paper. Revise your work to improve clarity.

Introduction
Science can be defined as the systematic and organized body of knowledge that defines a particular subject. In this case, any systematically organized subject could basically be referred to as science. According to Okasha science basically entails the principles of understanding, explaining as well as predicting our world of existence. Okasha further notes that the current teaching of science in schools and Universities is done largely in a historical way. Political science focuses on the study of human beings at a collective level. It is important to note that the human brain is so complex and is considered a physical device, therefore, very poorly understood.
Prompt 1
Is Political Science Science?
Political science can be referred to as a science that deals with the political governance of man. It is the branch of social science that basically deals with the foundations of a State alongside the principles of governance (Janet Paul). It is important to note that the foundations of the government together with its principles have strong origins in the past and spreads their influence towards the future. In this case, it is considered the systematic study that scrutinizes the political problems of yesterday for the purposes of benefiting current situations for the reasons for improving the future. The interaction of the new forces in recent times has necessitated different mechanisms towards the study of Political Science. This has led to the suggestion that the subject of Political Science should not only be confined in terms of objects such as State and governance but encompasses a wide scope of approach. This reveals that the definition of the subject should encompass different activities that relate to the act of human and social control relations. There are some instances where it is regarded as the study of the problem of power as well as social control. In this case, the contemporary political scientists have tried to avoid the existing over rationalization account of institutions, therefore, adorning the past mechanisms as applicable in the governance of State with new concepts as derivative of sociological as well as anthropological theories.
According to Aristotle, Politics should be considered as the Master of Science. The same view was resonated by different scholars such as Bodin, Bryce, Hobbes as well as Sidgwick despite some earlier writers denying such a claim. The denial was based on the fact that there could never be such a thing as the scientific study of State and government. This was in agreement with Burke’s sentiments that there is no science of politics anymore as compared to the science of aesthetics. This is since there is a total difference between the models of politics and the lines of mathematics. Both cases demand a distinctive method of approach since each subject is broad, lengthy and deep that demands various levels of modifications.
However, whether political science is really science or not basically depends upon what is regarded as the test of science. In this case, political science is considered neither as exact science nor claims the capabi...
