Cultural Relativism
Relativism in Philosophy relates to the idea of people having different perspectives and conclusions to different circumstances (Anonymous, n.d.a). Besides, it denies the claim that a single truth is the ‘absolute’ truth no matter how an individual perceives it. However, different philosophical interpretations were taken by various cultures in ancient civilizations.
Cultural Relativism refers to the notion that a particular individual perceives a situation according to their culture (Anonymous n.d.b). The ethical and moral system of every society is set according to their beliefs, and there is no right or wrong perspective. It further explains that the concept of good and evil is not set in stone, and only a society may pass the judgement over appropriate or inappropriate behaviour in their moral and ethical systems, showing that no moral or ethical system can be considered right or wrong. Understanding the perspective of a society is essential in figuring out why they adopted a particular culture and developed a particular ideology. For example, in ancient culture, dying hair in green colour might be considered an offence that invoked punishment. However, it would be uncanny to punish someone for dying their hair green in the present society.
