1 Describe your impressions of the article on technology and overpopulation. What school of thought are you most comfortable with and why; the bigger pie school, the fewer forks school, or the better manners school?
Sommerfeld (2003) demonstrated the differences in the viewpoints between environmentalists and economists. The former instigated that overpopulation will result in the scarcity of resources since there is an imbalance between human reproduction and resource reproduction. On the other hand, economists believe that overpopulation helps create new resources via technology. Thus, technology cancels the need to reduce the population and makes it central to innovation.
From a personal perspective, the most appropriate school of thought is the “fewer forks school.” This is because population growth is accompanied by expanding needs and that there is no such thing as an infinite number of resources, despite the help of innovative technologies. Although the capacity of technologies to provide the necessities, the questionable thought is the financial capacity of governments or the public to support such techniques since these are cost-effective, but the budget cannot be solely directed to it.
