The Russian novelist, Fyodor Dostoevsky, is known for one of the greatest intrigues into human existence, nature, and form through his publication in the mid-19th century titled Notes from the Underground. The fictional account by the author posits that human beings are complex creatures whose nature is difficult to fathom and whom when given the opportunity may deny the existence of reality as it is to articulate their points of view across various issues and overlook the potential benefits of acknowledging or accepting the reality. In essence, human beings can react or do things in a certain way that defeats logical reasoning or their innate abilities to rationalize their course of action to take when facing various situations or scenarios in life. Such is the case for some of the leaders across different countries in the world whose handling of the COVID-19 epidemic raises questions about both their personalities and competencies as custodians of the diverse leadership roles. As the world grapples with the devastating effects of the novel Coronavirus with almost all countries embracing containment measures for the same, President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil continues to make headlines for all the wrong reasons concerning his approach to the global pandemic. The leader refuses to accept the reality of the threat posed by the spread of COVI-19 in his country and dismisses calls by other members of the nation’s leadership to embrace nationwide interventional measures. Despite the rising cases of infections and mortality rates, the President remains adamant in his belief that the novel Coronavirus is another strain of the common flu. The President continues to downplay the negative impacts of the disease across the country and appears fixated on playing politics by carrying out publicity stunts that seem to be working for his political advantage.
The devastating effects of the novel Corona Virus from its epicenter in Wuhan, China to the European countries such as Italy and in the neighboring United States serve as a call for a cautious approach in dealing with the spread of the pandemic.
