This assignment consist of two separate essay from one class.( each is 3 pages, not including title and reference page)
Here is some back ground information you need to know:
I’m a junior and an international student from China and now study social work in NYU silvers school of social work. This class is a filed placement class in which we are placed in social work/social welfare agencies to work and gain experience. We have both in class sessions and work session.( in class session are basically instructor answer our concerns during our work) I was placed in the queensboro council of social welfare, I only went to my first day( interview) and then school remove to online due to coronavirus. I was able to work remotely with the agency then. This agent is located in queens in NYU and it works on providing information to their clients on housing, job, substance abuse, food stamps and more( nearly everything you can imagine) . My boss wants me to take the social media part of their work, for example, finding informations and making them into posters and send them to clients. I did a poster about where can clients find food in NYC during coronavirus( see attached)

My social location/positionality
Professional social workers and any other individual have some form of social position, which defines how they live and behave in society. According to Brisebois & González-Prendes (2014), establishing a social location and positionality is important to social workers because it enables them to comprehend the inherent power related to their social location and how to help the unfortunate in the society. In this regard, positionality is the political and social framework that generates one identity with reads to race, gender, class, sexuality, and capability status. Since 2010, positionality has also been used to describe how individuals recognize manipulation, possible prejudice, and their comprehension of humankind. I am cisgender and straight; but I also cherish and accept other genders. I am also a compassionate Chinese national, and my social positionalities are valuable to me as I write this essay, and as I engage in social welfare activities.
How my social location/positionality relate to the field of placement
So far, engaging in an internship at Queensboro Council for Social Welfare (QCSW) has been helpful to the Queens Borough community, especially with the current situation related to COVID-19. QCSW offers assistance in the form of free information related to substance abuse programs, housing rights, crime victims’ assistance, education, mental health, job counseling, and senior services. Brisebois & González-Prendes addresses the importance of human relationships to social workers. The creation of human relationships is an ethical responsibility that promotes the well being of individuals. My social positionality especially, the acceptance of other genders and compassionate, has allowed me to create various relationships with the residents of Queens. However, it is not that easy because Queens County is among the most diverse places in the world.
One major theme from “My journey toward anti-oppressive work in child welfare” is how welfare work related to children undergoes critical reviews. Brisebois & González-Prendes (2014) mention that failure to successfully help children create a heavy burden on the social worker, both at a personal and professional level. While compassion is a significant part of my social positionality, the COVID-19 situation has left me with doubts.
