Hi! the texts below are the instructions from my Chinese History professor about what to write. I also attached three readings given by my professor. You can use them as references if needed.
Write about the plan about your life and career at this moment of uncertainty. Think about if history provides any help for you to figure out this issue. I would suggest at least three dimensions for our discussion.
First, the pandemic itself. How should you weather through this terrible season? We read a lot of history about pandemics and quarantine. Now our country is debating about re-opening. What is your best strategy to go on with your life and study in the current situation?
Second, your education. We were not only forced into online learning, but also don’t even know what is going to happen next. I include a few articles about college crisis. We don’t know even if the school will be open next semester, or if it is going to shift to online courses entirely. Obviously, everyone needs some re-planning. What would you plan for your college education?
Third, the recession and your job. We are entering a deep recession for sure. The only question is how bad it is going to be. Even after the recession, our economy is more likely to be profoundly transformed. Some non-essential business may become permanently non-essential. How should you prepare for this?
I, as a faculty member, have to deal with the above three questions too. People used to believe that a tenured faculty enjoys a life-time employment. It is no longer true. I expect a tsunami in higher education in coming years. Luckily enough, with some visions as a historian, I have been thinking about those issues for a long time, so I am prepared for it. This is the moment to put our historical learning into practical use.

The Pandemic
Since globalization, the world became a small neighborhood where people can easily interact without facing any barriers. People are free to move from one place to another, trade, and do other things. Although globalization has contributed to the development of the global economy, it has also led to the spread of diseases. COVID-19 has become one of the major pandemic diseases that has affected millions of people globally. These crises have affected different developing countries. To curb the spread of the coronavirus, measures like national lockdown have been adopted by different countries. Social distancing has been encouraged as well. These strategies are meant to limit social gatherings and the movement of people.
However, during the crisis, a lot of countries like the United States are considering reopening the economy. This is because economically, nations have been affected. For example, people have lost their jobs. Although nations need to operate economically, I feel that it is not the right decision. Re-opening the economy means that the virus will spread and a lot of people will die from the virus. During this current situation, I will stay at home as much as I can, keep a safe distance, wash my hands often, and wear a mask. Staying at home means that I am not supposed to go to school. Therefore I would prefer to study online and submit my assignments online. I believe that these are the best strategies I should adopt if I want to be safe.

After the outbreak of coronavirus, colleges and universities have taken a lot of measures to curb the spread of the disease. For example, universities have moved to online classes and have instructed students to vacate the university premises. Additionally, spring sports activities have also been canceled. While people thought that these measures were short-term, the current situations seem that schools will be closed for a long time. As students, we were forced into online learning but were are not sure how long it might last. Harris (2020) states that there is a possibility that schools might reopen in 2021. Online learning is very expensive for a lot of families. The author also states that students can resume school on the condition that auditoriums and arena can be used as lecture halls.
