What is a model of analysis for international relations and which is best: idealism or realism?

Three levels of analysis are used in the field of politics which are based on the international system, the individual or the state. In analyzing international relations, various models are employed such as idealism and the realism models. The idealism focuses on the individual perspective whereby the moral of a person can be translated to that of a nation and therefore forming the government. The model is best utilized by democratic governments in which the moral principles of an individual are translated into those of an international system. Realism model, on the other hand, entails the state analysis model in which the power of the state is translated into the interest of the state. The assumption deduced under the model is that the state is regarded to be an entity seeking power that competes with one another without a central power (Marcionis, 2012). The paper expounds more as to why idealism is the best model compared to realism and other models. Marcionis in his study showed that in the early 20th century, political idealism and political realism were seen as rival models in analyzing international relations. To begin with, realism as a model put more emphasis on the tragic side of the human nature. Political idealism is perceived to be more optimistic. Idealism dwells on the fact that human nature is so basic and therefore prioritizing the needs of the people (Marcionis, 2012).
