Introduction
Young violent offenders are in a good place to be rehabilitated. Despite this, some of the States such as California, still use the harsh approach where minors that are involved in violent crimes are sent to court and tried as adults. This means that, the sentences they are handed are also steep much like an adult would. As a minor, it is much easier to reform if they are charged in the juvenile system regardless of their crimes. There are subtle disadvantages of trying a minor as an adult given the environment that they are exposed to in jail (Scott, 2012). Relative to the amount of violence that is instigated in the adult systems, these minors only drift further away from being rehabilitated.
Thesis statement: Violent minors who are charged as adults have less chances of recovering from their criminal behavior.
One of the aspects that has to be considered when charging minors who have been involved in violent crimes is that, the bottom line of the correction centers as the name suggests is to assist criminals to reform. However, this is a meaning that a little skewed relative to the level of violence that is found in most of the prison centers across the states. Ideally, most of the prison environments are associated with violent random activities which if the minors are charged as adults will experience. Some of the more common activities include stabbings and fatal brawls. As such, when a minor is sentenced as an adult, this is an environment that they have to survive (Scott, 2012). This means that they are always on guard to protect themselves and in some of the cases they are forced to form alliances with major criminals to maintain the status quo which by extension guarantees their safety in prison.
