Megan R. Underhill Inductive Reasoning on Racial Discrimination

In October 2018, Megan R. Underhill published their study in Washington Post. According to the author, parents in the United States have started teaching their children how to be non-racist. They basically want the little one to grow up and live in a more peaceful and better environment than ever. Given that African Americans are not treated well in almost all parts of the United States, parents have shared their concerns regarding what would be the future of their kids. They do not want their children to think in a negative way and to disrespect other people based on their class, race, gender, religion or background. In order to clarify things in a better way, the expert conducted a survey and 52 white parents participated in this 2014-15 study (Underhill, 2019). Almost all of them claimed that they and their kids did not believe in any type of discrimination. It was best evidenced when Megan R. Underhill asked parents if they were regularly speaking with their kids about being white. All of them were shocked to hear that, asking if it was important to discuss with the children. Their surprised responses made the researcher realize that people were not actually serious about teaching their kids how to value humans irrespective of their race, gender, class, religion, and background.
Megan R. Underhill then argued that white people living in different parts of the United States are actually racialized, which means they have grown up learning about the importance of being white. The main purpose of this argument is that white Americans are not able to fully understand the meaning of humanity; they pretend to be supporting, respecting, guiding and valuing everyone in the United States. They also pretend that they are teaching their children to not judge people based on their race or class differences. However, the fact is that they do not bother to speak to their kids openly on this matter and it looks like they are not actually in favor of black people living in different parts of the country.
It is inductive reasoning because Megan R. Underhill started their study with observations or surveys and moved toward generalization and theory. In deductive reasoning, a statement or hypothesis is formulated and then tested through observations to determine whether or not it is true.
One of the fallacies used here is the Bandwagon Fallacy. According to this concept, just because a number of people believe a proposition to be true does not mean it is actually true. For example, the parents who claim that they are raising their children in a way that they learn how to respect others without any discrimination are actually not speaking to their kids openly on the matter. In simple words, they pretend to be teaching them moral values, but many of them refuse to openly sit with their kids and discuss different things. Just because they are hesitating to speak to their kids in this regard does not mean people living in other parts of the world are not speaking to their children openly.
