Emile Durkheim’s Theoretical Orientations
Mechanical solidarity is about people doing or feeling the same thing, especially in small societies. These can be cultural norms or collective activities (Gofman, 2014). Organics solidarity is the process where each and every person is interdependent resulting in a complex web to form an association. Organic solidarity is about acknowledging individual differences and bringing together individual strengths to achieve more (Gofman, 2014).
The concept of mechanical solidarity and organic solidarity explains the division of labor, for instance divisions of labor in simple societies are mechanical in that they are homogeneous. According Durkheim, division of labor is associated with increasing contact among people. Such similarities exist in our family (Gofman, 2014).
Organic solidarity explains division of labor because it is about people doing different things but are interdependent. Organic solidarity is about people having different roles, but are held together by the opposition or these differences. Division of labor occurs in different ways for example in the modern societies; the advanced working process makes societies integrated because the division of labor is simultaneous (Portes, 2014).
In my recent place of employment, division of labor is evident where the supermarket owner places different teams of sales persons into clusters. Different teams are expected to work together to develop strategies for marketing different products .these teams work together, and team members depend on each other to accomplish the task.
