Reasons for Choosing the Topic
The reason for choosing the topic for me is to evaluate the transformation of Korean cinema. The tensions and challenges faced by the cinema industry during the post-boom period make this topic interesting for me. Women are the main focus of Korean movies through the years as mostly they have been marginalized. The male actors played the women characters in silent movies. The women faced gender discrimination from society, which meant that women were not allowed to play a character on stage and screen movies. For instance, in the movies Shakespeare in Love (1998) and Farewell My Concubine (1993), the men played the role of female characters. The Lee Wol-hwa was the first woman to play a role in 'The Vow Made Below the Moon' (1923) drama. After the debut appearance of Lee Wol-hwa, the women were able to appear on screen only on the condition that they will play fictional characters and images. The women have been portrayed as a wise mother, good wife, wicked women, and seductress (Yi, 2017). The movies represent both the positive and negative sides of women. The females and women have been victims of cruelty and brutality in Korean society. In the movies like 'The Uninvited,’ 'Secret Love,’ 'Memento Mori,’ 'Bad Guy,’ 'Green Fish' and 'Ghost in Love' the women have been represented as a victim of discrimination and patriarchal society (Choe, 2016). The feminism within South Korea is directly linked with hatred behavior shown by men. I think that women should be given equal status at par with men in Korean society and the film industry. The perceptions of the people should be changed by launching public awareness campaigns highlighting women's issues.
New Things Learned
I have learned about gender inequality and critical problems faced by women in the film industry. Women are underrepresented in Korean movies due to the biased behavior of the males present in society. The Korean movies which are focused on women have received less exposure at both national and international level. Besides, the Korean female directors do not receive much appreciation for their work as compared to their male counterparts (Choe, 2018). This situation is demoralizing for the Korean women at large. The investors and producers are unwilling to allocate large budgets on the movies which are made by Korean women directors. It means that the women director has to remain within their low budget to produce a quality film. The women directors have very little room for incorporating creative ideas in the movies with a limited financial budget.
Moreover, the women are discouraged from entering into the fields like cinematography as certain elements of the society strongly oppose them. Besides, there is a high level of reluctance present in the film industry to provide expensive equipment for women. The gender disparity issue has been raised by local societies and communities operating in Korea. The sexual abuse faced by women has been highlighted the most by human rights activists (Lee, 2019).
