The Santa Fe Trail was among the greatest routes of trade in America. The Santa Fe Trail was a significant route for the military, emigration and business purposes, between the year 1821 and 1880 the time that it got a replacement by railway (Dary, 2012). In the year 1825, there was the signing of an agreement between the United States and Osage Indians to obtain the right of passage to the public, and that was the Santa Fe Trail (Dary, 2012). The extension of the route was from Missouri to Santa Fe found in the area now known as New Mexico. The length of the route was approximately nine hundred miles. The path stretched further to the southern part from Santa Fe for an extra thousand miles via El Paso down to the Mexican town of Chihuahua as well as Durango. The route followed the natural path where wagon masters were located alongside the rest of the way. Before the inauguration of the route for commercial reasons, the supply of goods together with services to Santa Fe city was by means of mules at very high costs from the seaport of Mexico of Veracruz (Dary, 2012). Accordingly, the paper will concentrate on the significance of the Santa Fe Trail as well as its contribution to the trading sector. Also, the paper will shed light on barriers that traders encountered while using this route.
The Spanish dominated to acquire the results of conquering New Mexico. The Spanish were envious of their property of land in the new world. Therefore, they went ahead to make a close guarding of their territory. There was a discouragement of making any form of interaction with other people especially the Europeans. The Spanish had a prohibition of trading activities up to the eastern part of Mexico. They made a closure of their land taking effect to prevent foreigners from entering their land. The Mexicans went to battle to seek their independence from 1810 to 1821 resulting in the triumph of the Mexico people over the French men. Later, Mexico permitted the large populace of the people from the United States to make settlements in Texas and liberty to travel as well as to do commercial activities with the Mexicans. The departure of the Spanish was the opening of a major access to the west that is the Santa Fe Trail (Dary, 2012).
The Santa Fe Trail boarded the northern edge and traversed the corner at the northwestern region of Comancheria, the land of people of the Comanche community who required a reimbursement in order to receive a grant to allow passage of the commercial route. This population was an indication that there would be an increase in the market for the traders from the United States (Mergenthal, 2016). The Santa Fe Trail would be of great significance to the transportation of commercial products. Some of the benefits of the exchange route include the allowance for trading activities, which led to the delivery of the much-needed silver to America. Other goods transported through the route were clothes of various types such as linens, flannels, muslins, silks, dimity, chambray, calico, percales and ginghams to the southwestern region.
