The attack on the United States on September 11, 2001, exposed the vulnerabilities in the country’s defense system in the fight against terrorism. Since the 9/11 attack, the U.S. government has emphasized deterring international terror groups from perpetrating attacks on U.S. soil and has done extremely well in that regard. However, criminal activities from within that merit to be regarded as domestic terrorism started to crop up. The article, Domestic terrorism: An overview by Bjelopera (2017) critically explores the controversial term domestic terrorism in conjunction with other threats often regarded as homegrown violent extremism. The article discloses some shortcomings in the justice department and the multiple agencies tasked with countering domestic terrorism. This paper further examines these shortcomings and proposed measures in handling the growing menace of domestic terrorism.
Federal agencies tasked with safeguarding peace for American citizens
lack a clear distinction between homegrown violent extremism, hate crimes, and domestic terrorism. The varying interpretations of the contrasting terms by the different agencies responsible for fighting violent extremism, perpetrators of hate crime, and even domestic terrorism is a major setback for the policymakers in enacting policies relating to the prosecution and countering criminal offenders for crimes merit classification as acts of terrorism. Any acts of violence that lead to the destruction of property and loss of lives for innocent civilians that are perpetrated by homegrown Americans regardless of their motives should be classified as domestic terrorism and meted with the full force of the law. Sugarcoating criminal offenders withs terms that bear the status of low degrees such as hate crime, violent extremism, and a few others yet are causing as many harms as international terrorism does very little in the fight against domestic terrorism. Such classification would elevate the sentencing criteria for criminal offenders and potentially deflate their motives for partaking in acts of domestic terrorism.
