This week, we look at the threat of infectious diseases, both “newly emerging and reemerging”. “The Emerging Infectious Diseases” cautions us that we need to “exert significant international effort to monitor and contain” a variety of infectious diseases.
You are the deputy director of emergency services for a major city in Massachusetts. The director of elder affairs asks to meet with you. The city has a large elder population, and the director wants to track possible diseases for whom the elder population (as well as the city) may be most vulnerable. You go back and meet with the director, your immediate boss, who, while recognizing that you are not a medical professional, asks you to lead a working group to assist.
Identify please three types of information you would look for, and three resources you would use to attempt to identify an infectious disease threat. Are there others you would want to bring into this working group? (This is an information gathering, analysis and knowledge management issue, I am not asking for medical expertise). The three types of information I would look for while identifying the infectious disease is the rate of spread, the fatality rate and the features of the affected group such as class and gender. The rate at which the disease is advancing will influence the response mechanism that has to be employed to reduce the impact; the fatality rate will assist the researcher to know how often the affected population can perish. The class and gender will provide useful information as to whether the economic conditions or sex affect the rate of dispersion and death rates. The elderly population is at higher risk of the new emerging and reemerging diseases because the majority has issues that involve diet, health, and income.
The three resources that I would rely on while identifying the infectious disease include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) that specializes in allergy and infections.
