The TED talk, “How to green the world’s largest deserts and reverse climate, “by Allan Savory, discusses the strategy countries can employ to make grasslands and forests green and avoid climate change.
Allan begins by describing the problem of climate change as a storm whose aim is to institute a dim reality over the world. According to him, over two-thirds of the world’s land is a desert due to land remaining bare, causing devastation of the soil and emission of carbon. Further, he asserts that climate change occurs due to the increased population of the world to about ten billion people and desertification of land through livestock keeping and grazing. According to him, desertification of most lands occurs due to the failure of the vegetation to undergo biological decay. As a result, most countries attempt to facilitate this process by burning plants, and in his case depopulating the forests. Nevertheless, these two strategies do not work as instead, they end up exposing the soil and heightening desertification.
Allan believes that using herds of livestock by grazing them together and moving from one area to another is the only solution that can alleviate desertification. The strategy, known as the holistic planned grazing, seeks to mimic nature and the presence of predators in forests where different types of animals live. Livestock grazing achieves this by feeding on the vegetation and mulching the soil with plants, cow dung, and urine. Consequently, the soil ably holds and retains water; absorb carbon dioxide and breakdown methane, creating a favorable ground for the growth of vegetation.
He concludes by recommending that by implementing this strategy in half of the bare lands in the world, the vegetation can be significant enough to cover vast land while ensuring all people have food.
