Chapter Summary
Chapter 4 explores the involvement of sexuality through anecdotal evidence from a lesbian named Dominique and those who see her as a role model. The chapter critically examines the concept of sexuality and class dynamics. Additionally, the chapter investigates the role of sexuality and gender in the organization of the lives of low-income young Black women in society. Notably, in chapter 4, the author explores an aspect of normative and deviant sexuality, especially the perspective of the appropriate and dysfunctional gendered expressions common in contemporary society (Hetzler, 2017). Consequently, the intersection of class and sexuality is the foundation of the narrative analysis in the chapter. The chapter highlights the assumption regarding the regulation of sexual agency of young Black women, especially concerning the nature of the formal and informal protection they receive because of the perception that they are productive citizens or destroyers of the society. Furthermore, the chapter profiles young women with alternative views on the benefits and intentional perils of sex positivism for Black girls. Cox exposes the underlying networks premised in love and community that care and protect people who are different by providing familial support, regardless of how normal social institutions.
