The Particulate Nature of Each Enslaved Person's Experience
Slavery was one of the darkest and lowest moments in American and humankind's history. It showed the savagery of human nature and highlighted the risks that can occur in a rigid society. Families were torn apart, women were exposed to extreme cases of sexual abuse, men were sent to work in tough conditions and the living conditions of these enslaved people were quite deplorable. Reading through the three slave narratives by Phoebe Lyons, Charles Green and Anna Maria provides a more vivid and first-hand insight into what it meant to be enslaved. It also generates new perspectives about the particulate nature of each enslaved person's experience.
I have always known and heard of certain experiences that the enslaved people went through. Reading through the narratives, however, it becomes clear that these enslaved people indeed went through many tribulations. Phoebe Lyons highlights how enslaved people were treated so cruelly when they failed to carry out a certain duty; being hit with a club that had nails sticking out so that it tore through the flesh of the enslaved person. There is also the story of Charles Green and Anna Maria, who note that they often underwent inhumane treatment both within and outside their masters' houses. It is quite surprising to note that churches also had specific areas set aside for enslaved people, quite different from where the rest of the predominantly white congregation sat. The same churches that teach about loving one another and even treating one's enemy well seemed to propagate slavery even more through such actions.
