Observation of Services Provided
During my visit to Head Start, I observed several services provided to families and children. These services included the provision of preschool services to families with low income, and children requiring special care. Pre-school education is of great importance to a child (Froiland, 2021). I also observed Head Start providing schooling services to people from different backgrounds. ESL classes for adults who do not speak English at all or fluently were also provided (Office of Head Start, 2022). I also realized that Head Start provides food to different families on a monthly basis, as well as clothes and toys for children. Further, they provide adequate meals throughout the day for their students, including breakfast, lunch, and healthy snacks. Head Start also assists parents to acquire places where they can live comfortably with their children, and work to acquire an income. The parents have an opportunity to offer volunteer services in the classrooms, which boosts parental engagement in the children’s education (Gross et al., 2020). Grandmothers and the elderly are not excluded from learning. Parents on the other hand have the privilege of attending meetings with Head Start, where they get to learn how they can go back to school or earn certificates.
Interview
I interviewed the family worker who explained the services they offer. One of these is early childhood education. Head Start’s preschool services engage families and children who are between three and five years. The preschool services are developmentally appropriate, offering learning experiences that steer the growth and development of a child’s cognition, social-emotional abilities, language, and physical wellness. The instructors working with these children and their families are highly professional as they employ various instructional strategies and the tools necessary to support the learning of these children. Some of the strategies used include group activities, individualized instructions, and learning that is play-based.
The family worker also explained that they offer health and nutrition services to families and children. The comprehensive health and nutrition package by Head Start includes immunizations, medical check-ups, regular screening for vision and hearing, and provision of nutritious and adequate snacks and meals. In addition, mental health check-ups, therapy, and referral services are offered here. Head Start programs are very ardent in engaging children in physical activity, which ensures they grow as fit and healthy individuals. Further, from a young age, children are taught oral and general hygiene. Further, the programs assist families to gain comprehension and be supportive of the health and behavioral needs of their children. Head Start helps families and their children to overcome and heal from traumatic events and situations that are overwhelming.
