In the Parent Who Stays, Reyna Grande narrates of family separation she experienced as a child when her mother and father emigrated from Mexico to the United States. She eventually joins her family at 9 but her separation trauma did not end at that point. Her first experience with borders came at the age of two where parents left Mexico to seek a better life in the United States. In two years her mother also left to the land across the border leaving Reyna Grande with her siblings behind. By the time she was five years old; she did not have her parents with her, they were left under the care of their paternal grandmother who fed them poor despite receiving money from her parents regularly (Stone, 2017). Every day she yearned for the day her family would be reunited again. At the age of nine years, she came found herself face to face with the borders and she had to become a criminal of breaking the law of the United States for her to have a chance to meet her father again.
When her mother returns from her disappearance that had lasted for almost two-and-a-half year absence, she is roughly unrecognizable to Reyna. She has her hair dyed bright red, her clothes are much fancier and beautiful than anything she used to wear before she migrated to the United States.
