Essay Instructions:

In this week's lecture material, you were introduced to the concept of using different layers for an application and how GIS analysis may be used to look at the relationships between them. We will take this concept and make it practical. As a GIS Project Manager at a firm specializing in GIS you have been hired by a Massachusetts city to assist them in developing their first GIS program. The city has very limited funds to build their GIS with and have set aside most of the budget to purchase GIS software and servers to store the data so they are looking to save as much money as possible acquiring data. They are looking to you to make recommendations regarding how to get started. Fortunately there is a state run GIS website which provides data free of charge http://www(dot)mass(dot)gov/anf/research-and-tech/it-serv-and-support/application-serv/office-of-geographic-information-massgis/datalayers/layerlist.html

1) What layers would you choose/download from the MassGIS website?
I would download the political and administrative boundaries then the latest and updated aerial photos, environmental analysis population demographics data. Similarly, I would focus on the Coastal marine features, conservation data, infrastructure, elevation and regulated areas where there is risk of floods. The vector data layers can be repositioned when the images available do not have the same projection. Caution is exercised when adding the data layers when it is possible to zoom and support seamless layering (Folger, 2010). Integrating the boundaries and the district boundaries helps to represent the different localities in the Geographic Information system (Folger, 2010). 2) What are the advantages of using data from a site like MassGIS? The like MassGIS has readily available information to depict spatial patterns and relationships, as one then has to use the GIS coordinates and the data available to identify such patterns. Besides spatial analysis GIS has been utilized together advanced analytics to enhance mapping that is easily accessible (Dangermond, 2017). The information in like MassGIS is readily available and can be shared, while there is updated data imagery and information. Additionally access to data supports project planning and this is vital in building the GIS where mapping is essential to producing information that can be easily understood and interpreted by different users.
