Every nation has its operational rules and guidelines. Even on a small scale, each society has guidelines explaining acceptable and unacceptable behavior. Sociologists William Graham Summer defines deviance as violating established contextual social or cultural norms. According to William, defiance is the failure to act according to society's dictates and could range from picking one's nose in a public place to committing murder (Little &McGivern, 2014). Faulkner believes in the absolute following of the set rules and norms, failure to which one is deviant.
Emily Durkheim's view differs from that of William Faulkner. In Durkheim's theory, natural deviance is a driver of innovation, and it challenges societal norms (Little &McGivern, 2014). In his arguments, he offers that when black students defied the norms and participated in sit-ins during the civil rights movement, they challenged segregation (Little &McGivern, 2014).
