Tricia Rose observes that female rappers have promoted feminist ideas over the years, yet they do not identify as feminists (Rose, 1994). Female rappers saw the need to promote these ideas after male rappers' continuous sexual exploitation of black women. However, Rose also notes that despite their feminist ideals, female rappers tend to contradict themselves by showcasing their sexuality as a tool for male manipulation (Rose, 1994).

One of the themes that dominate the work of female rappers is heterosexual courtship (Rose, 1994). Female rappers view heterosexual relationships as unequal to females. In their view, heterosexual relationships make women dependent on men emotionally and economically. As such, female rappers seek to assert their independence. One of the ways they do so is by criticizing heterosexual relationships. The second theme that dominates the work of female rappers is the importance of the female voice (Rose, 1994). The female voice is essential to female rappers because it helps correct the gender injustices within society. Female rappers seek to use their positions of influence to speak about all matters concerning black culture. The third theme is black women's mastery of rap and their public display of sexual freedom (Rose, 1994). Black women are as skilled in rapping as black men are. Yet, black rappers often use derogatory female terms in their music and view women as sex objects. Hence, female rappers use their rap mastery to attack black men's disrespect for women and showcase their sexual freedom.

On the one hand, Salt' Salt' N'' Pepa's "Tramp" exposes certain men as tramps. On the other hand, MC Lyte's "Paper Thin" highlights the fact that women can see right through men's smooth pick-up lines. Both "Tramp" and "Paper Thin" sound alike because they assert that women are aware of who men are. In "Tramp," the rappers critique the kind of men who sleep with several women. In "Paper Thin," MC Lyte critiques the easy manner in which men think they can get women. Salt ''N'' Pepa critiques men who are tramps by showing how they take advantage of women. On the other hand, MC Lyte critiques men who are not serious about commitment by declaring that to her, the words of such men are just "paper-thin."
