From language learning to fairness, geopolitics, and ethnic identities, culture seems to permeate the entire paradigm of society and education. Culture and learning are two mutually dependent factors; a society’s cultural trends influence any educational pattern. For example, in a community with religious culture, the pedagogical emphasis would be placed on attaining ethical and perpetual life ideals. The purpose of this paper is to examine how educational curriculum affects a student’s self-esteem and cultural identity, how the learning system in the United States reflects its colonial history, how culturally-based teaching methods perpetuate social inequality, the relevance of academic institutions participating in open conversation about racial prejudice, and ethnic differences in society and their lessons and practices.
There are various ways in which how educational curriculum affects a student’s self-esteem and cultural identity. First, people often utilize education to mold their social identities and define their perceptions of themselves and interactions with others. It aids in the formation of good ethnic identities among students. For example, they may put together several initiatives to foster interethnic engagement. Students may also develop their knowledge of various ethnicities, and at the same time, they will be aware of the benefits and distinctiveness of ethnic identity (Milner, 2010). Students who have a thorough awareness of ethnic identity are more likely to accept and appreciate people from various ethnic groups. Identity, sense of attachment and devotion to a community, a perception of shared values, and views toward one’s ethnic group are all considered to be essential characteristics of cultural identity. One can manage one’s quality of life to achieve economic and social progress. Individuals may develop self-esteem and the confidence to confront the world and society via education and a better understanding of their hearts’ desires. The cornerstone of one’s existence is self-assuredness. Firm individuals can make judgments and choices about their behaviors and break away from negative outside pressure or intrusion. Education provides the foundation for assertiveness and courage. One’s self-esteem, without education, cannot be compared to that of a learned person as it is for someone who has received an education.
Although the American educational system has undergone significant changes since its inception, there is still substantial uneven distribution of educational resources, such as school funding, competent and experienced instructors, reading materials, and technology to disadvantaged and marginalized areas.
