Alfred Adler created some theories regarding personalities that mainly focused on the needs of therapists for them to understand a person in the context of his or her social environment. According to the author, character and behavior derive from developmental issues which include birth order. Adler believes that when you are born impacts personality(Adler,1964). For instance, the older child is likely to work on perfecting and the need for affirmation and intellectual. Furthermore, this child might be expected to set an example and given responsibilities for the young siblings (Manaster, 1977).

Shmuck,(1963) indicates that the second child acts as a pacemaker. Baring the fact that there is the first child, the second child might grow to be competitive and consistent to be better than the first child. They are always eager for parental appraisal and hence tend to develop various gifts such as academic excellence or other arts. Because of their middle level, they tend to be the most flexible members of their families (Schmuck, 1963).
