Why China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Is Not A Good Thing
China's belt and road initiative (BRI) is not a new strategy. Many countries have attempted to use their growing power to annex and use other countries for their resources. The difference with China's BRI is that it is more economically oriented. Through the BRI, China seeks to invest heavily in infrastructure projects outside its country to benefit it in the long run. As recent reports have shown, the BRI creates a network of roads and trade links through which China can benefit. However, the Asian superpower is using low-interest loans to lure developing countries into its masterplan. This paper presents an explanation of why the BRI is not a good thing.
As stated, the BRI is not an idea that is new to the world. It is a plan for dominance in trade and the world economy disguised as a regional growth strategy. Empires have been built on a similar model, but they have eventually collapsed under the emergence of new superpowers (Leandro & Duarte, 2020). As history has proven, it is strategically impossible for a world power to exist based on a scheme to dominate the world. The reason is that other powerful countries, in fear of being insignificant, tend to form alliances to check the growing superpower. In the case of China, blocks against it have already begun. This can be seen in the recent partnership between the United States (U.S.) and India. India is within the region that China is seeking to dominate first.
