St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) was born in Roccasecca, Italy. Aquinas’ family, headed by Landulph and his wife Theodora, was fairly well off since it was related to Henri VI and Fredrick I, both emperors, as well as Kings of France, Castile, and Aragon. Aquinas was genius, a great scholar whose thoroughness of thought enlivened the wake of the Renaissance and has remained relevant a crucial building block in philosophy centuries after his death.
Thomas Aquinas arguably received the best education available at the time. At just the age of five, Aquinas joined Benedictine monks in the Abbey of Monte Cassino as a trainee. Thomas only left the monastery for Naples when he turned 13 because the political climate was unfavorable.

Aristotle’s works were a major part of his readings before growing interested in contemporary monastic orders that centered on spiritual service. He studied at the University of Naples from 1239. Five years later, he gained membership in the Order of Preachers, receiving the habit in 1240. His family learned that he was veering off their conservative path and principles under which he was brought up, leading to his imprisonment for nearly two years. Upon release in 1245, he studied in Naples, Paris, and Cologne wherein he was ordained 1250. Afterward, he taught theology at the University of Paris, Naples, Orvietto, and Rome (Brown, n.d.), and later earned his doctorate in the same field as a student of St. Albert the Great.
Thomas’ literary as well as his remarkable contribution to philosophy output remain vast.
