Introduction
Introduction
History has for a long time provides the present with a lot of valuable information. The volume of information it provides, has been used as examples to learn from, to embrace, avoid or advance in one way or the other. From ancient events to warfare, there are endless lessons that the past has over time provided the present with. Amongst the standout of them all, are the ancient rulers. Most regions of the world were under kingdoms or empires in the past. These kingdoms and empires were ruled by people who knew not only the art of war, but also that of diplomacy. Using their wisdom, they not only expanded but also consolidated their spheres of influence.
Thesis
This paper offers a comparative analysis of Ramses II and Constantine. Ramses II and Constantine are two of history’s brilliant rulers. They effectively served up their roles as leaders, both in war and religion. They knew how to draw out military strategies while also outline economic plans for their regions. Additionally, these men were good when it came to propaganda.
Similarities
Both Ramses II and Constantine were great conquerors. He launched many military campaigns to go out and reclaim the territories which were initially in Egypt before being lost, during the reigns of his predecessors. He started enjoying the responsibilities of a leader while still at the age of just fourteen after being appointed by his dad. Ramses II was a great military strategist and commander. In his reign, he managed to consolidate the territories that had been occupied by Nubians. Ramses used to use a strategy where he would go out to conquer these territories, then later on get into some form of peace treaty with them(Wilkinson,2011). Constantine too, was a great conqueror. He is famous for taking over Eastern Rome in a day by defeating Maxentius. He also took over the territory of Licinius, a territory that was largely in Greece.
Both Ramses and Constantine used propaganda in their leadership styles. The use of propaganda was aimed at ensuring increased popularity and loyalty amongst their subjects. Ramses used to use inscriptions as his main tool of propaganda. He could inscribe his name on most structures across the country, especially the iconic monuments of his kingdom. This won him loyalty amongst his subjects too. Constantine on the other hand, also used propaganda through the use of the Constantine’s Arch to command loyalty amongst the people (Roth, 2013). By attaching some religious undertones to the symbol that he so claimed to have given him victory in war, Constantine managed to influence the people to follow his decrees willingly rather than by coercion that comes with authoritarianism (Leithart, 2010).
