Project 1: Analyzing Remotely Sensed ImagesFor this project, you are asked to write a paper on the use of remote sensing to perform change analysis of a city or town in Connecticut. To accomplish this, you will need to make use of two different sources of remotely sensed images, Google Earth Pro and the UConn Air Photo Archive. The paper must be written in pros format, do not turn in an outline or list.
The Connecticut city or town is up to you - it can be Storrs, your hometown, a city- you have visited often, or simply a city that is interesting to you. Your paper may include why you picked your particular city, its geographic location, historical and urban significance, demographic changes, current socioeconomic characteristics and challenges (e.g. traffic, public education, crime, housmg), and future development plan (if applicable). Be sure to cite sources here. This information is ancillary to the mam project, so don't spend to much time on it.
Once you have selected a city, the task will be to:
First, open Google Earth Pro. You may have to install Google Earth Pro on your device. This link should take you to the download page for Windows https: www.google.com earth versions =download-pro. If you have further questions or need help downloading Google Earth Pro, contact me or the TA at least one week before the due date of the assignment. Once Google Earth Pro is open, familiarize yourself with the interface, paying particular attention to the toolbar at the top of the screen. If you do not see this toolbar, select the “View" dropdown menu and make sure that the “toolbar" is selected. It should look like the image below.Once you have familiarized yourself with Google Earth Pro, navigate to your chosen city or town and click the “Show Historical Imagery" button on the toolbar. Answer the following questions:
• How far back do the images go for your study area0
• What are the differences in quality between the oldest images and the newest?
• Between the oldest and newest image, what has changed? Why do you think these changes occurred?
Include screenshots of the photos you chose to compare.
Next, access the UConn Air Photo Archive via this link (https: arcg.is 14Gmvl) Follow the instructions on the pop-up menu to familiarize yourself with the interface. Once that is accomplished, turn on the layer for the year 1934. Navigate to your study area (Hint: You can use the search bar in the upper right-hand corner). Click on a point in your study area and download the tiff by scrolling to the bottom and clicking “More Info" next to “Download_T". Answer the following questions.
• What has changed between the 1934 air photo and the satellite images you got from Google Earth Pro?
• What are the differences in quality between the 1934 image and the satellite images from Google Earth Pro?
• How are historical images like this useful to geographers? How are they beneficial to non-geographers?Include the air photo in your writeup.The total paper should be at least 1,000 words (excluding references), double spaced with 12-pt Times New Roman font. Pomts will be deducted if the paper is under 1,000 words. Please submit your paper as .pdf or .docx file. The term paper has a due date at 11:59PM on March 27th. Projects are accepted for partial credit after the deadline, but after a 24 hour grace period, there is a penalty of 10% per day late. Projects turned in 6 or more days past the due date will receive a maximum of 50%.You must use and cite at least five sources (this can include the textbooks, peer-reviewed articles, monographs, etc.). New York City is the choice for this contextual study. The city is preferred because it is one of the key metropolises in the United States. It is the principal epicenter for all international diplomacy. It is an attractive city that makes people from all sorts and walks of life to always travel to and fro, to reside and do their activities. It has flourished in commerce, cultural, financial, media, art, fashion, technology, education, research, amongst other factors. Furthermore, it is home-based for the command center of the U.N. The city can be the best and excellent place to be.
Geographically, it is positioned along the polar eastern, nearly midway of the two cities, that is; Boston and Washington. Todt Hill is the uppermost part in New York having 1249 m above sea level. New York has a total area of 1213.37km2, of which 302.643 square miles, that is, 783.84km2 is made of land while 165.84 square miles (429.53km2) is water (Cox, 2019).
The existing sources show that New York City was early occupied by the Lenape a long time ago. Later, the Europeans (Dutch) who discovered the area in the 16th century founded New Amsterdam in the year 1626. Later on in the year 1664, the English intruded and conquered the city, and then renamed the New Amsterdam to New York. (Shulz, 2018)
From the sources, the population density of New York City is projected to be approximately 28,000 persons for each square mile. Thus, being a very compactly occupied in the nation. The city comprises whites, black Americans, Native Americans, and Asians. Europeans and non-Hispanic whites are in large numbers of all the population.
Sexual orientation and Gender Identity
The study area is open to various sexual orientation groups and gender identity. In fact, the city has passed a law to protect the sexual orientation evidenced in the study area. New York is a home-based to most prominent self – identifying gay and bisexual community. Same-sex marriages are legalized in the very area. The area composes several faiths. They include Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Adherents, and Atheism. People have the right to express and worship anywhere at any time.
Challenges Facing New York
Just like some capitals in the world, the city never misses having some difficulties. The following are several problems faced in New York. Firstly, there are high rates of poverty. Poverty rate in the city is approximately 30 percent of the more than 1.7 million children live in poverty. They animate in homes with no access to healthy, security, and food that can be easily affordable. Also, the city is characterized by high youth unemployment. Lack of job and employment opportunities to youth has increased which has led to an increase in crime rates. Other challenges include overcrowding in schools and colleges due to a large number of students, absence of supervision of children after schools, increased helplessness to vagrancy amongst others.
