On January 18 2021, President-elect Joe Bidden chose Jeff Marootian, an openly gay director, to serve in a capacity as an important advisor on environmental concerns in the incoming administration. Marootian will be President Joe Biden’s Special Assistant for Climate and Science Agency Personnel. The position is under Presidential Personnel Executive Office that select and appoint potential staff members who are qualified to meet the needs of the administration. As the Special Assistant to the President, Marootian will advise the President and his team concerning staff positions handling environmental or scientific concerns, including positions in the Domestic Climate Policy Office, the Departments of Energy, Interior, and the Environmental Protection Agency (Riley, 2021). In essence, the decision to appoint Marootian shows that the Biden Administration is committed to advance the special interest of the LGBTQ community. The need to advance the rights of minority groups in America is gaining momentum, especially with the appointment of Marootian at the highest office.
Jeff Marootian's appointment as a top official in Biden's administration can be viewed from a political context. Joe Biden's administration is keen to advance the needs of the LGBTQ community, including appointing them to the highest office. This was not necessarily common with the immediate former administration. On May 6 2012, Joe said, “Who do you love? Who do you love? And will you be loyal to the person you love? And that’s what people are finding out is what all marriages, at their root, are about (Abramovitch, 2012)." According to President Biden, all individuals deserve to be treated with dignity and respect and co-exist without fear regardless of who they are or love. At the height of the Obama-Biden Administration, America made significant strides towards achieving equality with the LGBTQ community. However, the previous administration was accused of weakening LGBTQ protections. The Trump administration was accused of rolling back nondiscrimination protections for the LGBTQ members seeking health and welfare programs. As such, one can view Marootian's appointment as a breather following the growing complexities encountered in the previous administration. On a personal note, I believe it's time the LGBTQ community is accorded and given the rights they deserve. Everywhere, we see advancements in and improvements in previously rigid laws.
