My experience with our neighbor Aboriginal child
Close to two months now I have had a friend from the neighborhood who happens to be a second-generation mission child from the Aboriginal background. The boy had been adopted by a Christian couple the Williams who happen to be our immediate neighbors. We spent most of the time playing together with the boy and in some instances visit their home. The nuclear family where the Aboriginal boy was adopted presented a totally different climate, family life as well as lifestyle experience to the boy; the family consisted of two pensioner-age couple. The perception was that the good white Christian family would really provide love and care for the boy child.
I realized that the child was given a new surname and had to get used to her new name Keith that best suited the Williams couple. However, during this time, the child occasionally found herself amidst outbreak of arguments between the couple that produced a lot of anxiety in her. The anxiety showed up in him when he started wetting the bed for the first time in her life. The serious arguments at times forced Mrs. Williams, who happens to be a housewife to leave and go visiting the mother staying away for several days. This would leave the much time for the girl to spend with Mr. Williams at times they would go fishing together and in some instances would slack off in the event that the girl needed discipline. It appeared that the little Aboriginal boy was adopted for the purposes of bringing the divided couple closer together, and this proved an impossible mission for the boy. The boy would at times run to our house seeking emotional accommodation, especially whenever any argument transpired between the Williams couple.
The realization also dawned on the boy that the “Father” was not really practicing the Christian lifestyle as he was made to believe. Educationally, the boy was doing so well at the primary school where he attended and was even the best athlete for his age group. Later the principal of the school wanted to adopt the boy upon realizing that she was being taken back to the Mission home because of constant disagreement from his newly found parents. However, the request was denied since the Mission did not want the boy to be adopted by anyone other than the Protestant Christian family. The boy had to face a series of personal crises which led him to develop some form of resilience. I intend to think that such personal crises encountered through “new” experiences help such people to adjust to their ethnicity, social status, identity as well as a deep sense of community. Some of the personal crises involve changing of names at different ages for the purposes of suiting the environment. Such changes breed ground for potential identity crisis especially as the child enters teenage years.
I think that such kind of living interferes with one’s formative years since they lack full control of their lives. Their lives are always controlled and directed by other different personalities. In this case, the other people compr...
