Pornography refers to those materials that are designed to offer sexual stimulation and pleasure to those who hear, see, read or handle them. The pornography industry has been on a steady rise over the years. It has prompted many religions to offer their flocks moral teachings on contemporary issues like pornography. The Catholic faith provides several moral teachings when it comes to several contemporary problems. From these teachings, people from the Catholic religions are expected to use these teachings to steer them in the right direction. This paper basing its arguments on Catholic moral teaching reviews how pornography objectifies intimacy, how pornography kills or hampers love and the demonic nature of pornography.
Pornography objectifies intimacy. Intimacy got made to be pure and to be shared only among those who were bound together through marriage. God created intimacy for humans to achieve the purpose of companionship and procreation. For intimacy to be the way God meant it, there must be eros. Nevertheless, in pornography, love, also known as eros, is deliberately shut off, and both the partners see themselves just as an instrument and a means to an end. In pornography, there is no person-to-person relationship and is marked with violence and totalitarian coldness that is only witnessed in dictatorships and technocratic societies. Pornography drives humanity to the deceptive route characterized by isolated sex consumption (Pieper, 2011). Pornography deviates from what it was intended for because, in pornography, partners only engage in intimacy for commercial purposes. Other Christians watching pornography seem to help promote something that is against the Christian teachings. From this teaching, one can see that taking part in pornography as either the consumer or the actor is sinful in the eyes of God because it goes against everything that intimacy was intended for. When Christians shun pornography, the industry would be forced to close down, which will help protect the nature of intimacy as God intended it. Teaching those in pornography the effects of coitus without eros can help to shut down this sinful industry permanently.
