Abortion has been one of the most criticized social issues within modern society. Many people have raised issues regarding abortion, condemning, and terming it as social immorality. In this study, the focus is on the analysis of the connections between the dynamics of power, race, gender, sexuality, consent, and religion as presented in the conviction of Dr. Kenneth Edelin, who had conducted an abortion exercise on a 17 year old girl, and later convicted of manslaughter, as presented in the Sexing History podcast, “Abortion on Trial." This study will evaluate and discuss the problems associated with abortion, the advantages of abortion to women, and how female's decisions on their own body are controlled by male's power, and how the issue has been presented in the Bible.
Analysis Of The Connections Between The Dynamics Of Power, Race, Gender, Sexuality, Consent, And Religion In The History Of Roe Vs. Wade
The Sexing History podcast, “Abortion on Trial” in which the case of Dr. Kenneth Edelin, who was convicted of manslaughter, after he conducted an abortion exercise on a 17 year old girl, 10 months after abortion had been legalized in America. In the case, the girl had become pregnant while still a senior student and Dr. Kenneth Edelin conducted the abortion services, which was a legal exercise. While the conflicts existed between the two parties in the case on whether Dr. Kenneth Edelin killed the baby boy, it was evident that, other factors such as; dynamics of power, race, gender, sexuality, consent, and religion played a major role in the case. The girl was 17 weeks pregnant at the time she was seeking the abortion services, while the hospital officers estimated her pregnancy to be between 21 and 22 weeks. The pregnancy was kept as a secret from her father, who was violent, and therefore, the need to seek for abortion. The conviction of Dr. Kenneth Edelin, who was an African American physician, by a jury of white Catholics, it was evident that, religion, race and power played a major role in the case conviction, than the mistake of carrying out the abortion exercise (The Past Made Intimate, 2020). The determination of the case was also influenced by the fact that, only three of the judges were women, thereby, placing Dr. Kenneth Edelin at a bad place with the jury. His case was also determined based on the lines of ethnicity, thereby, spiking the revolution and abortion and the anti-abortion movements across American states. Gender issues played a major role in the determination of the case, since Dr. Kenneth Edelin did not get the support of women, who would understand the issue of abortion and how it helps women. The religious leaders stated that no woman was at liberty to abort, and no one had the right to abort, since they regarded the act as a crime and an act of killing. The debate on abortion sparked a nationwide anti-abortion movement led by religious and political leaders across the US, while those who supported abortion and liberty for women to abort at will led the campaign on abortion rights.
