Theories of Emotion

Essay Instructions:

Six basic emotions have been universally identified across cultures. They are happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, and disgust. Each emotion creates a different level of energy and reaction. For example, facial expressions are distinctly different for happiness than for anger. The overall theory is that emotions are evolutionary and help teach you something about each situation (e.g., sadness teaches you that we can care deeply about a person).
Using two of the theories of emotion in the reading ( this is the book I need you to use Ward, J. (2019). The Student's Guide to Cognitive Neuroscience (4th Edition). Taylor & Francis. https://purdueuniversityglobal(dot)vitalsource(dot)com/books/9781351035163), describe the theories and explain how they are different from each other. How do we use our emotions to learn about ourselves, and others? Try to use one of the theories of emotion in your response.

The other theory of emotion is the evolutionary proposed by Charles Darwin. Darwin argues that emotions evolve, are adaptive, and allow animals and humans to reproduce and survive. In particular, emotions motivate individuals to respond to external stimuli in their surroundings, which help to improve the chances of survival and success (Ward, 2019). For example, if an individual encounters an animal spitting or hissing, the chances are that it is frightened and ready to defend itself. As a res...
