CH. 7 SOCIAL BEHAVIOR
Stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination can have a number of aversive physical and mental health consequences.
CH. 8 PHYSICAL HEALTH
Two influential models used to study physical health include the biomedical model and the biopsychosocial model. Each model focuses on varying factors that contribute to health and illness.
CH. 9 PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS AND TREATMENT
The established systems of care have historically been, and continue to be, largely monocultural and ethnocentric in terms of how individuals are assessed, diagnosed, and treated. As a result, individuals from minority populations are more likely to receive treatments that are culturally-bound.
I have witnessed an act of racism where the police treated my African-American neighbor by pulling out their guns on him and handcuffing them even though he hadn't done anything. A few days before this incidence, rumors had that an African-American male was shot in the neighborhood. I assume that this all happened based on racism, prejudice, or discrimination against people of a different race. A substantial number of people stereotype that African-Americans are highly prone to be associated with violent crimes. The police in this situation were just influenced by this stereotype against African Americans, thus explaining their actions. The neighborhood has many white residents, and none of them was suspected of being the shooter. Days later, the police identified the shooter as a white male.
