Purpose:
The development of behavior skills, social skills, cognitive skills, and sensory-motor skills are important pieces of a typical early childhood environment. Encouraging the growth of these necessary skills in our young children with ASD is an important step in their development.
Scenario: ASD Case Study: Molly
Molly is a 4-year-old preschool child with ASD and significant expressive and receptive language deficits. She seldom uses her language spontaneously to communicate with peers and teachers. She has a difficult time following directions and transitioning from one activity to the next. Molly is very fearful of social situations and often avoids social interactions. Molly spends the vast majority of her time on the playground alone with little peer interaction. Molly engages in stereotypical behaviors such as hand flapping, vocalizations, and eye gazing. She has been noted to slap herself in the head and has recently begun slapping parents and teachers. Molly is noted to have a short attention span, poor motor coordination, difficulty tying her shoes and managing snaps and buttons, and sensory-seeking needs.

The case study is about Molly, a four-year-old preschool child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The child’s condition calls for the implementation of strategies, tools, and environmental support to help her improve her behavioral, social, cognitive, and sensory-motor skills. This paper will help address Molly’s needs in these skills by highlighting suitable strategies to implement with autistic children. 
Behavior Skills
According to the case study, Molly engages in stereotypical behaviors like hand flapping, vocalizations, and eye gazing. She has also been noted to slap herself in the head and has recently begun slapping her parents and teachers. In the typical early childhood environment, Molly’s behavior skills can be addressed through Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy: - a type of interpersonal therapy conducted by practitioners to help autistic children understand and change their behaviors (Roane et al., 2016). It involves using positive reinforcement whereby professionals use positive reinforcement to reward helpful behaviors (Roane et al., 2016). This approach will encourage Molly to engage in desired behaviors and desist from undesired conduct and stereotypic behaviors. Given Molly’s identified individual needs, modifying classroom environments, prompting, and fading would benefit her. 
Social/Emotional Skills
Molly has challenges with social skills because she fears social situations and often avoids social interactions. She also spends most of her time on the playground alone with little peer interaction. Creating a structured social skills group would address Molly’s social/emotional skills. These groups can help Molly to interact appropriately with her peers. During group sessions, it would be effective to use visual support, social narratives, and video modeling to teach children how to manage all sorts of social situations differently (Flynn & Healy, 2012). High levels of structured social groups in early interactions can boost Molly’s confidence, encouraging her to be more flexible and comfortable interacting with others. Keeping room lights dimmed and minimizing loud noise are some specific examples of strategies and environmental supports that would benefit Molly.
