Similarities and Differences between Freud’s and Jung’s Views of the Ego
Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung are the founders of psychoanalytical psychology. They have significantly shaped human understanding of contemporary psychology (Henderson, 2015). However, they are well-known for having different views on the discipline.
Freud’s Definition
Freud defined ego as a person's conscious perceptions, thoughts, and memories that enable them to deal effectively with reality (Henderson, 2015). It is the only part of the conscious reality that individuals are aware of when they think about themselves. According to Freud, the ego operates based on the principle of reality, trying to satisfy the id’s desires in realistic and socially acceptable ways (Oleksy, 2019).
Jung’s Definition
For Jung, ego is the conscious mind as it entails the memories, thoughts, and emotions well-known by an individual (Henderson, 2015). He attributed the ego to the feelings of identity. According to Jung, the ego or self-conscious has four inseparable functions: sensation, feeling, thinking, and intuition (Kaluaratchige, 2011).
Similarities of the Views
Both Freud and Jung agree that the ego is made of the conscious mind. In this view, Freud and Jung stated that the ego is an individual's conscious perception and memories. They deemed the ego the conscious center of the personality that controls individual behavior (Oleksy, 2019). That is to say, conscious awareness resides in the ego, according to Freud and Jung.
Both Freud and Jung also view that emotions influence behavior and ego. It means that emotions play a significant role in defining one’s personality. Emotions are also characterized by a conscious mind, which involves all things that a person is aware of and thinking about (Henderson, 2015). It means that people can only develop feelings for something they know and think.
