Self Presentation Through Social Media

Essay Instructions:

PS261 Social Psychology HW Assignment 1 Self-presentation has to do with the way we package ourselves for others to see. This topic is especially relevant now with the popularity of personal webpages, social networking sites, and blogs. One study (Marcus, Machilek, & Schütz, 2006) investigating personal websites found that visiting a welldesigned personal webpage for just 5 minutes allowed for meaningful inferences about the owner’s personality, at least as they corresponded to self-reported traits. Such sites allow individuals to project an image of their selves that is “read” by others. According to the text, there are two types of self-presentation: strategic and verification. In strategic selfpresentation, an individual contrives to shape an identity in such a way as to gain an advantage with others for purposes of being liked or to be seen as competent. In verification self-presentation, the goal is to be viewed by others in accordance with how the individual sees themself. In a well-crafted essay, discuss your thoughts on the following questions using references from the chapter, as needed to support your writing. What form of self-presentation is predominant in personal webpages, social networking sites, and blogs? Which form of self-presentation is displayed by social media personalities (such as influencers)? Which type of self-presentation do they think is most evident in personal videos posted on YouTube? Discuss some of the positive and negative aspects associated with each particular media (feel free to use screen shots to show the specific media examples). Can sponsorship deals affect people's self-presentation on their social media accounts? What do you think about people's self-presentation on their online platforms in comparison to their self-presentation in the real world? Please note that I do not give page ranges for the assignment – some people write concisely, and others do not. The assignment is completed when you have answered the questions in depth. As with all homework assignments in this class, collaboration and plagiarism is not acceptable or tolerated. If you need help, please see the TF or myself during office hours.

Self-Presentation on Social Media
According to available research, personal websites, social networking sites, and blogs tend to develop a unique appeal to the different kinds of people willing to invest, manage and ensure that they grow effectively. For instance, personal websites provide the owner with an opportunity to do whatever he/she wants in an inexpensive and highly flexible medium that is accessible to a worldwide audience.
One form of self-presentation in personal websites, social networking sites, and blogs is the owner's openness to new ideas. According to research by Marcus et al., (2006), website owners are usually high on openness to experience. They yearn to learn new things that can help them improve their websites, blogs, and social networking platforms. However, Marcus et al., (2006) also noted that these individuals tend to be relatively introverted compared to the average person. Due to their introverted personality, these individuals are usually uncomfortable in social interactions. These people are used to staying alone and like people respecting their spaces.
Lastly, these individuals demonstrate confidence from their excellent academic and job-related skills and performance. Research shows that the introverted personalities of these individuals affect their self-esteem, making them question their physical appearances. These weaknesses in their self-esteem are compensated by the confidence emanating from their skills.
Social media personalities depend on their personality to either attract more customers or investors or drive them away. As a result, these individuals must have attractive personalities. The majority of the influences usually adopt a strategic self-presentation personality. An strategic self-presentation personality motivates people to get along with others and be liked (Marcus et al., 2006). Since these individuals want to be liked, they need to put their foot forward, keep smiling to the customer or investors, and ensure that they demonstrate confidence as they interact with the customers. This will also help to confidence the customers in achieving the intended goals.
Another personality that is displayed by these social media personalities is self-promotion. Self-promotion refers to acts motivated by the desire to go ahead and gain respect based on competence; to become a successful social media personality, you need to have some go...
