Professional nursing organizations are the cornerstone in the development of the nursing career. There are many benefits of being a member of a professional nursing organization. First, the organization provides a platform for interaction with peers. Furthermore, unity is a strength, and professional organizations provide nurses with a higher bargaining power to be heard at local and national levels (Matthews, 2012). Additionally, members of professional organizations provide the nurses with opportunities for self-professional improvement. This is through providing certificates to members. The organizations also organize educational conferences for the nurses to keep abreast with the current practices in the health care system. Further, the professional body will provide educational opportunities relevant to the area of nursing specialization (Gaines, 2019).
The Academy for Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) is an organization that specializes in the field of nursing. The Academy was founded in 1991, and it brings together nurses specialized in taking care of patients who are preparing for surgery and those recovering from surgery (Academy for Medical Surgery Nurses, 2021). The organization’s mission is to build a robust community of medical surgical nurses to provide standard care through offering scholarships, certification, and advocating for quality patient care. Consequently, the organization's vision is to be the chief organization in medical surgical nursing. The organization's purpose is defined in its strategic plan that focuses on three key areas: a healthy practice environment, leadership and influence, and professional development. The main advantage of being a member of AMSN is that the organization provides medical surgery nurses with a certification that not only gives an individual person and professional growth but is also a sign of validation in the presence of employers. Additionally, the organization provides education and scholarship awards to its members to further their education.
Networking is important for a medical surgery nurse as it creates opportunities for its members. One through networking, the nurse, can learn about new and emerging practices in medical surgery. Additionally, meeting other medical surgeons from other hospitals will give the nurse an insight into how things are done in another hospital.
