Additionally, members of professional organizations provide the nurses with opportunities for self-professional improvement. This is through providing certificates to members. The organizations also organize educational conferences for the nurses to keep abreast with the current practices in the health care system. Further, the professional body will provide educational opportunities relevant to the area of nursing specialization (Gaines, 2019).
The Academy for Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) is an organization that specializes in the field of nursing. The Academy was founded in 1991, and it brings together nurses specialized in taking care of patients who are preparing for surgery and those recovering from surgery (Academy for Medical Surgery Nurses, 2021). The organization’s mission is to build a robust community of medical surgical nurses to provide standard care through offering scholarships, certification, and advocating for quality patient care. Consequently, the organization's vision is to be the chief organization in medical surgical nursing. The organization's purpose is defined in its strategic plan that focuses on three key areas: a healthy practice environment, leadership and influence, and professional development.
