Π‡ The main difference between homosexuality and transgenderism is their characteristics. On the one hand, homosexuality is defined as an individual's tendency or preference of being attracted to another of the same sex. This does not necessarily mean that they identify themselves as the opposite of their natal sex. In contrast to this, transgenderism happens when the individual identifies himself as a member or one from the opposite of his natal sex.
* Explain in detail the rationale behind twin studies. Discuss how such investigations show the genetic basis of homosexuality. (10 marks)
Π‡ The twin studies are one of the most famous studies regarding the debate between nature vs. nurture in understanding homosexuality. Notably, the nature vs. nurture debate determines whether homosexuality is caused by personal preference or by the individual's genetic makeup.
Thus, in order to study it, scientists have studied the 'concordance rate' of identical twins regarding their development of homosexuality. In doing so, they posited the question that if homosexuality is indeed genetic (nature), then identical twins should have high similarity in developing homosexual tendencies. Accordingly, the studies show that male-pairs and female-pairs of identical twins have around 52% and 48% concordance rates, respectively. This suggests the possibility that homosexual tendencies are indeed influenced by genetics.
