Mallory's behavior in the interview exemplifies transference because she displays actions that do not signal her to react the way she does. For example, she keeps assuming that her complaints are monotonous. She constantly wants to leave, but Dr. Santos asks her to stay. Dr. Santos shows that she is an active listener and interested in knowing what Mallory has to say. She asks her to explain further how she feels and to stay in the session so that she can be helped (Camtasia). Since Dr. Santos is not showing any signals that she is not interested in what Mallory has to say, Mallory is acting the way she is based on an unconscious issue, which is a sign of transference.
Transference is a term used to refer to when a client treats their relationship with the therapist similarly to the reactions, they may have had with someone else in the past (Pomerantz, 2016).
